He was married on October 6, 1870 in Monticello, Iowa (in Jones County) to Iowa Missouri Ogden. The 1880 census places him still in Monticello where he was employed as a carpenter. William moved his family to Oakdale, California in 1882 where they lived for only a short time before moving to Modesto. Later, they moved on to Watsonville, Benecia and, finally, San Jose. William Holston died in his sleep at the Hotel Worthy in San Francisco. He was 86 years old at the time. The family cemetery is located in Modesto where William is presumably buried with three of his sons: Fred, Guy and Klyde.
