Biography
Bert was born in Iowa and raised in Modesto, California. For the marjoity of his life, he
lived in the Bay Area, south of San Francisco. After his marriage to Gussie Ash, he
and his wife settled in the Salinas area where they lived for six years. In 1902, they moved
to Mayfield, California, purchasing a house at 390 Leland Avenue. As of the date of this
writing (2004), this three story, one hundred year old house is still standing, just a few blocks
off of El Camino Real. Mayfield was later annexed by the city of Palo Alto.
Bert was hired on by Southern Pacific in May 1887. He worked at the railroad for 50 years. During most of
this time, Bert was the station master for the Southern Pacific Railroad at the Mayfield Station.
In addition to his career, Bert was active in the Live Oak Lodge 171, Independent Order of Odd Fellows.
Bert had a stroke on October 10, 1940 and died about three months later on January 6, 1941 at the Railroad
Hospital in San Francisco, California. He is buried at Alta Mesa Memorial Park, but I am unaware
of the cemetary's location.
