Bert Holston's January 7, 1900 Letter

Dear Billy:--      Below find a little data as regards to our family history as obtained from father and mother today:--it might be well to pre- serve same as it is certainly something we ought to know about. First comes fathers side of the house:--                                    W. A. Holston born Oct. 3rd 1845 near South Bend Indiana--being the eldest of 12 children--had 5 sisters and 6 brothers as follows:--first come William, Chauncey, now deceased, Mary, deceased, Kitty, Arthur, Jane, Johnny, Flora, Leroy, Frank, Emma, and Edward, deceased.                                    Their father John Holston born in Elizabethtown Kentucky in the year 1814 (now quite a little city on the Illinois Cent and Louisville and Nashville R.R.) had brothers and sisters as follows:--(1) Virginia oldest, (2) Harding, family lived at Fairfield, Ill. had a son John and two others, -3rd Nancey Jewell has two daughters live in Kansas-4th is Grandfather John Holston, 5th John Holston had two boys, live in Northern Indiana, 6th Aunt Sallie Battles-live two miles from South Bend, very wealthy, have three boys, Temple, Dell and George Battles--first two nick- named Bub and Dub, 7th Abe Holston lives in Nebraska has several children including Arthur and Grant,--Waller Holston the 8th son also lives in Nebraska, three children, Nettie, Rosa and Emerson. John Holston, our great grandfather was born in Delaware, he was a Baptist preacher and traveled from town to town doing evangelistic work--he traveled on horse-back most of the time from town to town. He was of Scotch parentage.      Our great grandmother's maiden name was Bailey born on the water of Irish parentage--she was a relative of Bailey the great Circus man.      Our grandmother's name was Avery born in New York State. William Holston and Missouri Iowa Ogden married Monticello Iowa October 6th 1860-had six children, Bert, William, Fred, Guy, Harry, and Klyde-Bert Holston married to Gussie Ash April 29th, William Holston married to Nellie Smiley July 8th 1893 at Modesto Calif.-- no children. Bert and Gussie married at San Mateo Apl 29th, 1896-- one son-Ashly-born Dec. 2nd 1899--end of the century. Both Nellie and Gussie born in Storey County Nevada. Fred Holston died in Mod- estro Calif. July 9th 1894--in his 17th year-typhoid fever. Guy Holston drowned in Dry Creek Modesto August 25th 1893 aged 13-- Klyde Holston died Apl 29th 1891-age 9months--of typhoid fever-- father and mother emigrated from Monticello Ia to Calif. in 1883.
Now comes mothers side of the house:--   OGDEN---      Our mother Missouri Iowa Ogden born June 23rd 1850 at Garyowen Jackson County Iowa--being the 6th child out of ten, first comes Henry, Sarah, Jane and Maria, now deceased; Albert Lydia, Missouri, Mary, Milton, William.      Their father Robert Breeze Ogden was born in Fredrick County Virginia in 1820, emigrated to Dubuque County in 1845-- previous to that lived in Ohio where he was married and had five children, taught school for several years in Ohio, dies in his 46th year in the year 1866. He is known as Judge Ogden--great arbitrator amonth the Irish populance near Dubuque. His father was born in England, his mother in Virginia. Had three or four brothers, Breeze, Joshua, Washington and one sister, Elizabeth Brown, the latter lived near Marion Iowa--has several children among whom are Austin, William, Victoria and Emma.      Joshua lived in Lynn County Iowa--had no children. Wash- ington died when a young man in Ohio, never married. Elizabeth Brown has three boys, Joshua lieves in Lynn Co Ia., Louis in Kansas at Cass center--is a lawyer, Charlie is also a lawyer, been Mayer in Anamosa Ia for many years.
     Grandma Odgen maiden name was Mary Foster born in Tuscaraws Co Ohio June 27th 1814--removed to Iowa in 1848--her father was Irish, born in Ireland, her mother was born in Virginia.
     Our great grandfather Thomas Ogden was an English gentle- man who came to this country on a pleasure trip and married Sarah Breeze who left her a widow when she married Henry Stubbins--both quite old--they had no children--perhaps you can remember great grandma Stubbins?      Grandma Ogden had eight brothers and sisters, five girls and three boys--Mary Ogden was the eldest, Elizabeth Stubbins, George William and Wesley Foster, Sarah Farmer, Catherine Cummings and Jane Reed--the later living in Ohio now--Sarah Farmer in Wright Co Iowa the balance now deceased.
