Edward August Ziebarth (Seebart), is the next in line of birth amongst
the Turtle River Ziebarths. Little seems to have been recorded about
this man. He married a Scandinavian woman from the Sagatuck, Michigan,
area; by the name of Jennie. It seems to have been common talk amongst
the Turtle River Ziebarths that she was a slave driver: that she
constantly rode herd on Edward and made life miserable for him. How
much truth there was in these charges will never be known to this
generation. The old saying is: "Where is there is so much smoke,
there must be some fire." However, it seems to have been agreed by
all of them that she was a wonderful seamstress; and that is really
quite a tribute when one considers that Grandfather August was a
professional tailor.
There were two daughters born to this couplePearl and Edna. They were
born at Sagatuck, where Edward and Jennie lived for most of their married
life. (Uncle Edward was employed in a furniture factory.) None of the
Emerado Seebarts had any recollection of these relatives. The father of
the two girls passed away at a relatively young age, and, apparently,
the mother and two girls moved to the New York area where Jennie was born.
A large picture, about 20 x 40 inches, of Edward August hung on the wall at the
foot of the bed in which I slept, with my brother Ed. I often studied
that fine, strong and handsome face. He had a broad forehead, in which
was set two inspiring eyes. My inward wish was, that I might grow up to
be a man like he. In Brother Ed's book there is a copy of a letter which
Aunt Jennie wrote to my mother following the death of her husband.
Judging by that letter, she loved him very much. Maybe the family beef
was just a case of generally bad-blood between the Swedes and the Dutch.
The letter reads:
Saugatuck, Mich. Sept. 15th 1891
Dear Brother and Sister Henry and Ella Seebart
Your kind and ever welcome letter recieved last week. many Thanks for the
Pictures. they are very good. Herby looks as natural as though it was but
yesterday that I last saw him. Wessie and Cassie have changed a little and
Grace has changed a great deal. she has gotten to be quite a large girl.
they are all very nice. how much I would like to see the babies picture.
remember me when you have them taken. Pearl has grown to be quite a little
lady. she can button her shoes and do quite a number of small things and
so knowing as she is for being so young. it is just one week today since
mother died Pearl seems to realize everything. a quarter to 3 Monday morning
Sept. 7th mother got a very hard spell. that hard spell lasted over 4 hours.
I was not alone with her. My sister-in-lawand my uncle Mothers Brother came
from Chicago, Sunday morning Sept 6th as staying with me. It was terrible
to tsee her suffer so but the end did not come in that hard spell. she lasted
till Tuesday about 11 oclock when she expired very quietly. she regained her
voice that morning. gave me a scolding for wearing that dress the day wanted
me to send to Town to get her some laudanum. she was so tired and could not get
any sleep she said that she could not die now any way and if she did not get
some sleep she could not live. she had not eaten anything to speak of for
over a week and flet very weak and tired. she had two sinking spells prior
to that hard spell I was alone with her those 2 times. I am alone to-night
and it is dreadfull lone-some, dreary, desolate and unbearable to be alone
here where there used to be so many. Oh why was Ed taken from me why don't
he come back to me. I must go to bed I cannot set up any longer alone. it
is only 9 oclock the bare thoughts of being alone drives me wild. I cant
write. I cant think I must go lie down beside my little ones. I hope it wont
be long before I can go to Ed my darling my all. good night.
What a year of sorrow this has been to us all one short year ago all seemed
bright. no thoughts of death coming so soon in our midst. little did we
dream one year ago that the stongest ones of our circle would be taken
away from us so soon. Dear Amelia what a sad sad year for her. Just getting
over little Arthurs death when a greater blow lays open the bleeding heart
again. Just a short time then another blow to you all. will there be any
more before the close of the year going to join the loved ones above. I
must hasten on with my letter. I haven't said anything about babe. she
is sitting in the high chair. I am very glad to hear you are all having
good crops this year. love and kisses from babies to their cousins. Write
soon
