Origins and Migrations
Grandfather Charleya August Ziebarth (pictured here in a photo taken circa
1875) was born in the Province of Poznan,
Germany, August 26, 1820. Although most of his people were
agriculturists, Charleya was apprenticed as a tailor and became a
real professional. He followed his trade assiduously and devotedly
all of his life. He not only make all of the clothing for his family,
but
he tailored commercially in all of the communities where he lived.
Brother Ed reports a conversation with Uncle Fred, in which Ed asked the
question: "How was it that Grandfather August homesteaded on only 80
acres in the Turtle River area, when there was so much land available
at such a low cost of attainment?" To this question, Uncle Fred replied:
"You must remember first, that he came from a background of small farms,
and 80 acres looked like a lot of land to him, and second, he actually
did very little of the farming operation himself, for he was a
professional tailor. He sat in the house and make all of the clothing
for the family, and tailored commercially, while his wife and children
did all the farm work."
Great Grandparents
Unfortunately, as of this writing, we have no information concerning
the parents of Charleya August Ziebarth, excepting that they resided
in the Province of Poznan, East Germany, where their children were born.
My mother spoke of brothers and sisters of August, but she had no exact
recollection of names or numbers. Some of them man have migrated to
America when Grandfather August did, but a search for the Ziebarth name
in the records of Rennsselaer County of New York has produced no results.
